Our Story

Here is ...some of... the story of Kevin and I :)

The Day We Met - September 17, 2008

It was the beginning of sophomore year at BYU and I walked into the Cougareat (BYU's food court in the Wilkinson building). I was wearing dance clothes and I didn't have time to go back to my apartment and change after practice. Now these dance clothes aren't that cute.  I wore black tights with a black folk dance skirt paired with a shade shirt and an Abercrombie & Fitch zip up hoodie. I even had curled my hair in the ponytail for practice which was an accomplishment. It was one of those things you do early in the semester before you get lazy every day.  I wasn't able to schedule a lunch date with any of my friends because it was early in the semester and we didn't have our lunch times planned out. I never had really eaten alone and that is what I had planned to do.

I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to eat so I walked around deciding between the different options. I decided on Tomasito's, an Italian cafe.  It was a really busy and crowded day in the Cougareat and I didn't know where the end of the line was so I asked some guys, "Is this the end of the line?"  Kevin then said, "No, but you can cut with us."  So I cut in front of Kevin and Aaron Powell (one of Kevin's best friends).  Somehow it got brought up that Kevin played Baseball for BYU and Aaron ran track for BYU.  I hadn't heard the best stories about some of the guys on the team the year before so I asked Kevin "Oh, so you're one of those guys..."  Kevin didn't really understand what I was talking about and said he just got off a mission from Milan, Italy, so that was reassuring, ha.  Then Kevin got a phone call while standing in line and I talked with Aaron.  We all ordered our food and then Kevin asked "Do you want to sit with us?" And I said "Yes, actually, I have no one to sit with today!" So I followed him and Aaron to a table and their friends Andrew Dougherty and Bryce Merrill met up with them.

I met Kevin's friends and we all made small talk. They talked about where they served their missions. For some reason I had no clue what to say to returned missionaries (RM's).  I felt like I had to ask a ton of questions about their mission but I wasn't sure because I hadn't hung out with many before sophomore year. (I'm such a dork.) We talked about where everyone is from and I offended his friend Andrew because I made fun of his home state, California (he didn't understand my sarcasm.)

I found out Kevin's foot was broken still from when he broke it on his mission playing soccer a few months ago.  The doctors in Italy did not take care of it well! Ironically my foot was having problems from a stress fracture from dancing too much the prior semester.  Then Kevin talked about how much he wanted to learn how to dance and how I should give him private clogging lessons. If you don't know what clogging is, see it here.  Somehow I didn't even think much about his broken foot and kind of thought he was serious...yeah right! :)

We finished eating our Italian food and that was Kevin's first and "last" time he ever ate there! He complained about the quality and authenticity of the Italian food.  It was nothing compared to what he ate in Italy (obviously!) [It was his "last" time eating there until we decided to have a year reunion there with his friends to remember our meeting haha.]

It was time to head to our individual classes and we walked out of the Wilkinson center together. As we were walking outside we realized we never introduced ourselves and didn't even know each other's names! I found out his name was Kevin and I was Ashley! Then he asked for my number and talked about us possibly hanging out that week. He asked me about my schedule that week and I acted like I was really busy so we would have to text or talk later. Gotta play hard to get!

After school, I went on Facebook and showed my friend Shayla Forsey the guy I just met.  Yes, I totally stalked him and looked at ALL of his pictures!  I thought he had pretty blue eyes.

I texted him the next day,
September 18, 2008 (actually his birthday but I didn't know) and said something about wondering when I was going to teach him clogging and he totally did not reply! Not a very smooth move for me haha.

The next day,
September 19, 2008, he texted me in my Physical Science class actually, wondering if I was going to be at the Cougareat for lunch again.  I had other plans so we planned to meet later that night after I had parade rehearsal (the Folk dancers dance in the BYU Homecoming parade each year).

I drove over to his apartments at Marriage Cove (er...Carriage Cove) and got lost trying to find his building/apartment.  I remember I was SO annoyed because I couldn't understand his directions haha.  Anyways, I was totally wearing skinny jeans with a purple Ralph Lauren polo and flats (I remember outfits SO well...don't judge lol.)  We decided to watch The Pursuit of Happiness...worst movie ever! It was so boring and I kept asking him questions about his mission...I didn't know what else to say! And he held my hand...for the most of the movie! After the movie he asked me if he could kiss me and I said, "Maybe not the first time we're hanging out...well, if you want to."  I tried to play hard to get and then didn't commit fully haha so we didn't.  I remember loving his smile and his laugh.  He was just wearing a blue BYU Baseball sweat suit and he looked great!

We hung out that Saturday night at one of the BYU Baseball player's house, Sean McNaughton. I brought all of my girls from King Henry Apartments and we hung out with the Baseball guys.  Here we are! We played card games, watched a scary movie, and made s'mores! Kevin started calling me beautiful in Italian and who knows what and of course I liked it :)

I'll add more later but that is basically how we met!

Our Engagement - June 3, 2008

Before I get down to the proposal I need to preface it with some information.

Kevin and I knew we were going to get married before he officially proposed. We even started planning the wedding (a little bit) like setting the date for August 8, 2008 in the Denver, Colorado temple. Yes we were married on 08.08.08; how great is that? Anyways, we browsed jewelers and I figured out what type of a ring I liked so Kevin could be guided with his choice. I wanted something classic and not too trendy. I wanted to love my ring in ten years and not have it be one of those trendy ones.

So right after we set the date Kevin kept telling me how he wasn't sure when he was going to have the ring to propose. He had made comments before how he had a ring guy who could design it in a different state (which was true) and wasn't sure when the ring would be done. I also knew Kevin had looked at different jewelry stores so I was confused and was starting to get worried. It even got worse when he made comments that he wasn't sure if the engagement ring would be there in time for our Engagement pictures. I kept saying I can't get pictures without it and I would cancel the shoot if I didn't have it in time - obviously!

So my mom flew in to Utah to help me find a dress and start planning the wedding because we just barely set the date and that was two months away. Yep, we planned a wedding in TWO months; it is possible ladies. :)

June 1, 2008 - Sunday
So my mom was in town and Kevin invited me over to his apartment for a romantic Italian dinner at his apartment. My mom wasn't invited. He had slaved over making authentic Italian dishes, moving his apartment furniture around so we could have a nice table arrangement in the living room, and making the aesthetics just right.

[Kevin lived in Italy for 2 years serving a mission for the LDS church so he is a pro when it comes to Italian cuisine...and speaking Italian]

Well, I didn't think anything of it but Kevin was trying to fake me out. He thought I was thinking that he would propose that night, but I didn't really think that. I think my mom thought that he may propose that night. So he took me home to King Henry and my mom, him, and I all probably hung out. He likes to think he faked us out!

June 3, 2008 - Tuesday
The reason why Kevin and I were both at BYU in June was because we stayed for spring term. I was taking a Ballet and Economics class and Kevin was taking Calculus to get into the BYU Marriott School of Management.

I don't remember what Kevin was doing all day, maybe playing Baseball (Kevin played Baseball for BYU) but he invited me over to watch the stars on the BYU Baseball field and have dessert. I kind of had a feeling he may propose that night. Unfortunately I was not looking cute or anyway I would want to look when I get proposed to. I was wearing sweats and my hair was up because I had Ballet that day and didn't bother to get ready. I kind of felt bad that Kevin and I were going to look at stars without my mom and told her she could come a few times. She said she was fine and that we should go.

So Kevin picked me up and drove me over to the BYU Baseball field. It was around 9 or 10 pm when we headed over there. The clouds looked like they were going to rain soon so he said we had to hurry. I kept saying I don't think we will be able to see the stars! But he said we'll see some. We got out of the car and Kevin had a big picnic basket. We walked out onto the field and Kevin walked me over right where he wanted us to sit. He pulled a blanket out of the picnic basket and some candles. Angelfood cake, strawberries, and homemade cool whip came out as well. Kevin knew me well; I love strawberries and angelfood cake! I loved how he made the cool whip himself. So we just sat and talked, probably about the upcoming wedding.

Then Kevin said, alright, lets look at stars now. Then he said, no lets face this way and made me face a certain direction to "look" at the stars.  Then he blew out the candles and an animation came onto the Baseball scoreboard. There were a ton of stars flying and I knew he was proposing.  Then the words appeared, "Ashley, will you marry me?" I said, "Yes!" and realized he was kneeling and holding a box with a ring in it.  It was the ring I wanted from Wilson's Diamonds! I grabbed it out of the box and put it on....so he didn't even put it on my finger. I'm such a loser haha.

Right after he proposed. Yep, I am totally in dancer sweats/clothes.

Then it started to rain so we picked up the stuff and threw it in the picnic basket and ran off the field to the car. I asked Kevin how he had the animation go on the scoreboard at the right time. He said that his friend Andrew Dougherty was in the box office and the cue was when Kevin blew out the candles to start the animation. We had an audience ha! I think he said someone else was in there too.

We drove home to where I was living at King Henry and walked in. My mom was sitting with ALL of my room mates (I had 5 of them) and there were some other girls over as well. They all knew he had proposed! Then we drank some sparkling drink!
