Fantastic Caverns in Springfield, Missouri

I am obsessed with caves!

Well, ever since I had a clogging (dance) competition in Branson, Missouri at Silver Dollar City, I became obsessed with caves!

I was in elementary school or junior high when I went to one of the competitions there. Silver Dollar City is an amusement park/attraction in Branson with rides and all the works. What they have that sets them apart is a cave underneath the entrance called Marvel Cave! That is the first cave I think I went in.

Anyways, I loved going on a tour in that cave and when I started dating Kevin I thought it was awesome that he was from Missouri because of all of the caves there! Missouri has so many! After three years of being married we finally got to go in one ha!

We went to Fantastic Caverns in Springfield, Missouri!
Check out their website here
Anyways, over this weekend we stayed in Bolivar which is 20 minutes away from Fantastic Caverns so we had to stop by and check it out!
Oh, and I can't forget to say that this is one of only FOUR drive through caves in the world and the only ONE in the US!

Here is Fantastic Caverns!

They wouldn't let us touch the cave walls except for the ceiling here!
I am touching the beginnings of stalactites!

More stalactites.
Some cave terminology for you:
Stalactites: come down from the ceiling
Stalagmites: come from the ground up
Columns: when stalactites and stalagmites meet
Now identify them in the pictures!

Twin columns which are very rare.

  1. We went to Inner Space Caverns in Austin, TX when I was younger. It is a huge cavern that stretches all under I-35 south and it was AMAZING! Our tour leader told us that the first time people dropped down into it and turned on the flashlight it light up a huge underground mountain (that is how deep it is) and it scared them so bad they fell over!

Also - he gave us a really good way to remember the difference between stalactites and stalagmites (so good that I in fact STILL remember the difference!) Stalac{tites} have to hold on tight to the ceiling and stalag{mites} have to be mighty to grow up from the floor!

And now I want to go back to a cavern! :) Thanks for sharing this and bringing back some fun memories! :)

  2. Looks like so much fun! I did a walk through maze when I was in Virginia Beach area. I can't remember exactly where it was because I was in 9th grade at the time but I do remember how amazing everything was!

  5. that is gorgeous. i've been in cave in Bali. it was all dark and there are snakes in there, which people there keep because the snakes are considered as sacred. i don't really like being in an underground place, or a place with a lack contact with air.but since it's Bali, i can't hate Bali or anything Bali-ish,haha
